I thought I'd start this in a seperate topic...a carry on from another topic.
I must admit I do find it funny, that those who were able to build structures that last centuries, those who were able to sail without a compass or GPS, those who were able to perform complicated surgeries without the use of modern technology, who laid the foundations of some of the things we have today...i.e fire and the wheel...are considered uncivilised?
how on earth did they survive without GPS??? It has helped me a lot, and save my nerves when driving LOL
One thing that makes us civilised it to meet here, or in other social forums, one is to be with friends and family, my grand ma lived in the northern part of Finland, no running water, no toilet, -40 degrees when it was worst, wand wolf's running in the garden! I often think on her and how on earth she survived and what she did all days long!
Wiki dictionary giving it's definition Civilized : Having a highly developed society or culture. Showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement; humane, reasonable, ethical. Marked by refinement in taste and manners
My take on it rejects such futile constructions of man to erect a standard of definition for being domesticated when we have countless primordial instincts boiling in us. If we were honest with eachother we would notice that there are no moral and ethical rules when we go outside other than those to which a person is able to reach and the ladder doesn't have a beginning or an end.In this imbalance we can not find a form of being civilized, there are only influences and decisions that bring us to a point of behavioral structure. Also i consider that a person living in a natural habitat, not in society and human settlements, will develop a better understanding of communing with it's environment and making better and more "humane" judgements than a person living in the soup of imbalance and uncertainty sent forth by other fellow humans.
Indeed ... Lets take a deep thought about the word civilized.....
Lets see what we are doing...
1) Is technology a tool for civilization? is it a measurement of it?
2) i like the definition Hadrian has kindly provided by wiki pedia....
quoting:
"Showing evidence of moral and intellectual advancement; humane, reasonable, ethical. "
lets take this one by one...Make it more interesting by dissecting the meaning.....
1) Morals...hmmm.....which country has moral values...? And who protects morals?? people? or government?
can we safely say that countries with the lowest crime rates are more civilized that others? since morals arenot broken that frequently?
2) intellectual advancement: fair enough .....another question arises....would you measure this by comparisons of development? or the degree of intellect of a society...
I mean greece was intellectually advanced majour in philosophy ....but Pharoahs developed much more and upgraded much more than them with regards to materials, tools, war weapons...
Is it depth of thinking .. or is it upgrade comparisons...?? Or both ? ...does technology fit in ? or is it pruely mental, solidifying morals, correcting past macro rules and regualtions to better people in living? Education ?
If technology fits in ...then how does one compare an advancement with another? lets say the creation of a telescope compared to dynamite?or astronomy? or internet?
3) humane? who puts these humane rules? culture? or a bunch of faggots in the government that put rules to differetiate between human and unhumane....
4) reasonable : according to who ?
what if the cannibals right now got a sudden burst of testosterone and started getting 700 kids a year....over populated china in a few years ...made new laws and said eating each other is humane and reasonable !!!
the purpose of this is ...what is reasonable? and according to who ?
5) Ethical ??according to what ? morals? values?, religion, Media? education ?
I ask these points so we can discuss them and not take wordings for granted...
